Vertical ribbons of red radiolarian chert

This bluff, near Rodeo Beach in Marin County, CA, shows uplift following collision of undersea tectonic plate to form the northern California coastline. These chert layers were once horizontal on the ocean floor. They are made of the bodies of microscopic animals called radiolaria.
