These chestnuts are still young, note the brown stem attached to each. In the late fall, they will have grown to a much larger size where they will literally "pop" open and fall to the ground. The outer prickly case protects the fragile chestnut, which may be roasted or steamed.
The leaves on this chestnut is curled due to the drought we are experiencing in our area.
