Antichi cavalli alati - Ancient winged horses
L'opera scultorea dei "cavalli alati" è ormai assurta a simbolo della città di Tarquinia (Viterbo).
L'opera venne realizzata all'inizio del IV sec. AC da un artigiano etrusco, su una lastra alta 1.5m e larga 1.25m applicata poi sulla facciata frontale del grande Tempio dell'Ara della Regina, il tempio più grande di tutta l'Etruria.
I frammenti della lastra (un centinaio) vennero ritrovati nel 1938 a circa 3m di profondità e poi ricomposti.
Gli animali si distaccano progressivamente dalla lastra di fondo: inizialmente a bassorilievo, diventano poi a tutto tondo all'altezza della testa e delle ali. La lastra era fissata alla struttura lignea del tetto del tempio mediante lunghi chiodi di bronzo, alcuni dei quali, recuperati nello scavo, sono stati reinseriti nei fori originali.
L'opera si trova nel Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Tarquinia.

The sculptural work of the "winged horses" has now become a symbol of the city of Tarquinia (Italy).
The work was created at the beginning of the 4th century BC by an Etruscan craftsman, on a 1.5m high and 1.25m wide slab which was then applied to the front facade of the great Temple of the Ara della Regina, the largest temple in all of Etruria.
The fragments of the slab (about a hundred) were found in 1938 at a depth of about 3m and then recomposed.
The animals gradually detach themselves from the background slab: initially in low relief, they then become in the round at the height of the head and wings. The slab was fixed to the wooden structure of the temple roof using long bronze nails, some of which, recovered during the excavation, were reinserted in the original holes.
The work is located in the National Archaeological Museum of Tarquinia.
