Ted's New Zealand Herald News Flash... Christchurch Earthquake Saturday September 4th 2010
On Saturday morning a major earthquake hit New Zealand's second biggest city Christchurch , bringing down power lines, ripping up roads and wrecking building facades, but authorities reported no deaths. Authorities declared a formal civil defense state of emergency to coordinate recovery operations in the city, which has a population of about 350,000 people, after facades collapsed into streets, crushing cars and blocking roads. Two men suffered serious injuries and police closed off the central business district. The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.1 and a depth of 10 kms (6 miles), hitting the South Island city and a large surrounding area of farms at around 4.35 a.m. local time.
Tuesday September 7th...
Ted has been glued to the TV over the past couple of days...
Anxious and concerned for the people of Cantebury and Christchurch...
There continues to be aftershocks... with over 100 felt to date...
Last night saw 3 more major after shocks one at 5.1 and two at 5.4 magnitude
To date the damage has been extensive... with many homes rendered inhabitable.
The Central Business District continues to be cordoned off...
due to the instability of the buildings still left standing.
Many, including a number of Historic buildings will need to be demolished...
Many home owners and residents face uncertainty in the weeks ahead...
as the clean up begins and the extent of damage becomes realised.
Some not only have lost their homes...
but will not be able to rebuild on the damaged land.
But despite the major destruction and devastation incurred...
Everyone is thankful for the miraculous fact that no one was killed!
In addition to the Quakes in Christchurch.. Today there has also been reported a 5.4 Magnitude earthquake in the Hawkes Bay and a 4.0 Magnitude Earthquake in Wellington, both in the North Island.... I hope they're not making their way up to Auckland! I better not tell Ted! Although he has been running around getting his Survival Kit in order! %-)
