TWENTY SEVEN YEARS AGO
War was declared on the poor and underclasses of our City. Viewed and cast by many as an isolated incident instigated by militant anti police factions, it was instead the result of a deliberate plan to target an area that then mayor Ed Koch famously referred to as "One Big Urban Cess Pool," and remake it as a playground for the rich. Viewed properly as a milestone in a larger and far reaching campaign which continues until this day, and encompasses such elements as hyper development, accelerated gentrification and the assault on rent control, the Tompkins Square Park Police Riots of July-August 1988 retain far more than a passing relevance to the most pressing of current events for residents of NYC. They are a microcosm of what is happening all around us. Our City is under Siege.

Tompkins Square Park Campout - Camp New York Post
The Campout continues at Tompkins Square Park as scheduled. Although the NYPD "sniper tower" has been removed, the odious anti-homeless person atmosphere drummed up by the NY Post continues to heap derision and disrespect on homeless people. These people, these citizens and human beings that the NY Post has the arrogant nerve to slander and slur as "bums," are just trying to make a life. We live in a city where billionaires are allowed to park and hide their illegally gotten gains by buying no show real estate built at the expense of the people. The reason the rent is "too damn high" is because the real "bums" like Trump, his SIL Jared Kushner, and their bought and paid for political protectors like Shelly Silver have been allowed to run over our backs with cleats. We'll just be somebody's political football to be kicked around if the residents and homeless don't unify. The compassion of New Yorker's who signed on for this protest is without equal and we want to give you, the people, an opportunity to decide the future of our campout. Bring food, water, noisemakers and whatever it takes to stay warm on the cold nights to come.
Protest the NYPD "sniper tower" in Tompkins Square Park 1988 with a weekend long campout to celebrate the 27 years since the bloody NYPD riot that injured hundreds of innocent and unawares local citizens in our neighborhood. The arrogance of the NYPD was never greater since the recent erection of the "sniper" tower outfitted with cameras and recording equipment. A clear and blatant violation to first and fourth amendments rights to public assembly, free speech and privacy. Bring a tent, water and noise makers. Support the right of homeless people to enjoy a public park. Its real estate maggots like Jared Kushner who are destroying our community. Let's show him it won't come easy. In addition,first of all the camp will be called Camp New York Post and people will not be sleeping inside the park and being arrested we will sleep on 7th street outside the park and there will be no fires just free food and cold non-alcoholic drinks. We also will not block the sidewalk. The point we want to make is that the reason for doing this is not just the tower it is because we believe the NY Post used the sad plight of homeless people to create a return to Giuliani style policing in relation to the poor and those suffering from poverty, mental illness and gentrification and we do not want that to continue. Bring any copies you see being recycled [don't buy em] of the NY Post to sleep on and use as toilet paper.
