Os, Pieter Gerardus (1776-1839) - 1816 The Cossacks Entering Utrecht in 1813 (Central Museum Utrecht, The Netherlands)
Pieter Gerardus van Os was the son of painter and poet Jan van Os, and learned his trade from his father. Following his education in his native town of The Hague, he moved to Amsterdam where he earned his living painting miniature portraits and giving drawing lessons. In 1805 he started specialising in landscapes with cattle, borrowing extensively from the work of seventeenth-century Dutch masters. As a captain in the volunteer corps Van Os took part in the defence of Naarden in 1813 and 1814 against French troops. He captured moments of this turbulent period in simple sketches on which he later based a series of ten paintings. After 1816 Van Os returned to his specialty: landscapes with cattle.
