Piha is quite a famous beach in the Waitakere region northwest of Auckland. Partly for the beauty and the notable Lion's Rock sea stack, but also for all the rescues needed at this beach. All the beaches in this part of New Zealand are noted for the surf, and so the potential for rip currents. There are life guards stationed here...and there's been a reality TV show based here (Piha Rescue, also known as Deadly Surf and Surf Rescue).
It was the first time we'd been to Piha. We also visited Bethell's Beach and returned to Muriwai - it's so interesting to see how different all these beaches are. We definitely will need to return!
