little sunbeam tree
Finding something in a place you didn't expect to be.
The warm late-summer weather is about to leave so Lora and I both made arrangements to free up some time for a hike yesterday afternoon. We found childcare, informed work, changed physio appointments, etc. The plan was to go up Brunswick Mountain, enjoy the late afternoon light, and hike down in the dark.
Well, the clouds came in and didn't want to leave. Work caused Lora to be late. Then her childcare fell apart. Which gave me an opportunity to drop in on one of my work sites, and that turned out quite productive. It became too late to make any peaks so I decided to try and find some North Shore creeks to explore. But the water levels are so low right now even the larger ones have been reduced to a trickle.
Okay then, I'll just walk through the forest. Mostly off-trail and uphill. One of my favourite things to do anyway! After a while I notice the mist above me has a blueish tinge so I push upwards even more. Sure enough the blue sky is poking through. I took a couple of shots trying to show the contrast between mist and blue sky within a forest. Looked neat on my little LCD. Then I look behind me and finally noticed the sunbeams shooting through the last bit of cloud below. Don't I feel lucky in the end!
No time to try and setup the tripod as the beams kept on moving up and down the mountain. So I bumped up the ISO and gave it a running go. Chasing the light for about half an hour was so much fun.
Surprisingly only have about 20 shots. This was one of the last. Borrowing Lora's observation this morning, "...that tender baby tree being nurtured by the sunbeam..." sums up what I was going for.
