"Muhammad Ali Pasha was the Wāli (an administrative title that was used during the Ottoman Empire to designate governors of administrative divisions) of Egypt, Sudan, Palestine, Syria, Hejaz, Morea, Thasos, Crete. Born of Albanian parents, in 1769 in Kavala in the Ottoman territory of Macedonia (now in Greece) - died at Alexandria August 2, 1849. He is regarded as the "founder of modern Egypt".
