Moonta Uniting church

Foundation stone 6 Oct 1873 by Charles Drew, architect Rowland Rees, opened 9 Aug 1874 as Wesleyan Methodist church, limestone with Hindmarsh brick dressings, Methodist after Union 1900, became Uniting 1977. First church, wood, opened 1862. Second church foundation stone 7 Aug 1865 by Capt Hancock, opened Nov 1865, enlarged 1870, became hall 1874.

 

“the memorial stone, which is about 12 feet from the ground, bears the following inscription:— ‘This stone was laid by the Mayor of Moonta, Charles Drew. J. P. , October sixth, Anno Domini MDCCCLXXIII.’ The tea which came after was a great success, and was followed by a public meeting, presided over by Mr. Charles Drew. The chapel was crowded.” [Advertiser 10 Oct 1873]

 

“The material of the edifice is limestone with Hindmarsh brick dressings, cemented in front, and tuck-pointed at the sides. Mintaro slate is used for the steps, the best Duchess slates for the roof, and the windows are filled with ribbed glass until glass of more artistic fashion can be procured. . . The architect had generously presented the plans of the building but £100 had been voted to cover his travelling expenses.” [Wallaroo Times 12 Aug 1874]
