Belair St John's school chapel
Foundation stone 24 Sep 1898 by Bishop Harmer, consecrated as Holy Innocents Anglican 28 Dec 1898, bell dedicated 15 Feb 1914. Replaced 1990 by new church adjacent to 1924 hall. Solemn closing of 1898 building as church of Holy Innocents and immediate re-opening & licensing as St John’s Grammar School Chapel. Original altar, rood screen & communion rails remain in old church. Some ashes buried in old church memorial garden re-interred in new garden, other ashes remained.
“The site chosen occupies a position on the summit of the hill commanding a view of the Adelaide Plains and the Bay, and the Church, when completed, will face the road leading to the National Park. The plans, drawn by Mr. F. Spiller, provide for a nave, chancel, and porch, with a turreted tower, and the building will be of white freestone on a base of hard dark stone with brick quoins. . . foundation-stone, which is of finest Italian marble and the gift of Mr. Fred. Herring, of Victoria-square,” [Register 26 Sep 1898]
“in spite of the intense heat, numbers of people took advantage of the special trains to be present at the consecration of the simple and beautiful little church dedicated to 'The Holy Innocents'. . . a simple village church lifted high above the busy haunts of men.” [Chronicle 7 Jan 1899]
“the new bell, which Mr. A. G. Downer presented to the Church of the Holy Innocents, Belair, was dedicated, by the rector (Rev. F. J. Price) before evensong. There was a large congregation. The bell stands in a quaint wood-thatched belfry near to the church gate, but will be removed at a later time to a tower on the church” [Register 23 Feb 1914]
“Through the generosity of Mr. A. G. Downer, of Belair, the ringing of a bell will be heard from the Church of the Holy Innocents in the near future. The bell, which weighs 150 lb., will be hung in a wooden belfry until such time as the tower may be built to receive it permanently.” [Register 27 Jan 1914]
