Norwood Salvation Army Citadel

Opened 16 Aug 1897, memorial stones by Mrs Alexander Hay, John Darling MP, Sergeant-Major McCallum & Colonel William Peart. Young People's Hall opened 28 Feb 1925. Earlier services in old Town Hall.

 

“The Captain of the Salvation Army asked permission to put up temporarily in front of the old Town Hall, which they rented, the words 'Salvation Army Barracks’. Granted.” [Register 13 Apr 1886]

 

“the Norwood corps is going to erect a barracks at a cost of about £l,800. The services are held in the Town Hall at present, but that is inconvenient, and we want a place of our own.” [Register 26 Apr 1897]

 

“Norwood corps of the Salvation Army. . . For a long time the soldiers have occupied the old Town Hall on the Parade, but on account of the accommodation in all respects being inadequate, a new Citadel as it is called in Army parlance, is being built in George-street, within a stone's throw of the old barracks. . . two halls are in progress. . . also convenient rooms at the rear for the officers. . . The architect and builder is Major Saunders.” [Register 17 Aug 1897]

 

“Mrs. Alexander Hay was asked to set the first block. . . The next stone was laid by Mr. J. Darling, M.P. . . Sergeant Major McCallum, of the Norwood corps, and Colonel Peart, who set the other two blocks in position. The latter gentleman, who came from Melbourne to represent the commandant at the ceremony. . . The opening ceremony was followed by a tea, a torchlight procession, and a meeting in the Baptist Church.” [Chronicle 21 Aug 1897]
