Terowie Catholic Soldiers Memorial hall

Foundation stone 25 Apr 1920, architect J Jenkins of Port Pirie, opened 29 Aug 1920 adjacent to convent.

 

“Terowie. . . the foundation-stone of the Roman Catholic Fallen Soldiers' Memorial Hall, adjoining the Convent of St Joseph. . . There was a big attendance present, and a large sum was laid on the stone.” [Chronicle 1 May 1920]

 

“The building is a fine stone structure 54 ft. in length, 26 ft. in width, and 15 ft. high, with Gothic entrance 14 ft. by 9 ft., carrying triple Gothic memorial windows. At the rear is a room 26 ft. (by 10 ft., which can be converted into three dressing rooms by means of folding doors. Besides the three memorial windows there are two other stained-glass windows in front. . . the estate of the late Private J. Liddy having been donated to the funds by his sister, Mrs. J. Pick, in whose memory the central window, representing ‘The Light of the World’, was also erected. Mrs. Pick also gave a second window in memory of the seven Catholic lads of Terowie who died at the war, whilst Mrs. Churches donated another to the memory of her three brothers, who paid the supreme sacrifice.” [Southern Cross 3 Sep 1920]
