Semaphore St Bede's Anglican church

St Agnes. Window in memory of Ellen Allnut died 3 Nov 1901. Created by H L Vosz, design by J F Williams, unveiled 16 Nov 1902.

 

“ALLNUTT.— On the 3rd November at her residence, Kingston terrace, North Adelaide, Ellen Allnutt, aged 41 years.” [Register 4 Nov 1901]

 

“On Sunday morning the Bishop of Adelaide unveiled and dedicated two windows in St. Bede's Church, Semaphore, to the memory of the late Mr. E. M. Ashwin and Miss Ellen Allnutt, who had closely identified themselves with the work of the church and Sunday-school. . .The windows, which possess considerable artistic merit, were designed by Mr. J. W Williams, and executed by H. L.Vosz and Co.” [Advertiser 17 Nov 1902]

 

“The subject of the Allnutt memorial window is St. Agnes. This is a large window. The canopy and base are of floral design, the figure holding in the right hand the palm leaf, the Bible in the left hand, and the lamb, representing Innocence, standing .at her feet, the whole being surrounded with a blue-and-green conventional border. The tablet reads:-‘To the glory of God, in memory of Ellen Allnutt. who died November 3, 1901’.” [Advertiser 22 Nov 1902]

 

Church foundation stone 28 Oct 1878 by Lady Jervois, architect James Macgeorge, Dry Creek stone with brick dressings, opened 6 Apr 1879 as mission church of St Andrew, renamed St Bede’s 1881 at wish of Rev Canon Farr. Extensions foundation stone 16 Dec 1899 by Mrs Harmer, re-opened 19 Dec 1899, new chancel foundation stone 4 Aug 1928 by Bishop A N Thomas, opened 30 Nov 1928.
