“the Catholics and Wesleyans are vieing with each other in building, the former having their church in a very pretty situation near the residence of Mr. J. Kildea.” [Advertiser 10 Oct 1873]
“Christmas, was a general holiday, and the Roman Catholics held a service for the first time in their newly-erected church. No other public gathering took place in this neighbourhood. New Year’s Day was observed as a holiday by a few folk only, the greater number of the settlers being busy with their harvest.” [Register 10 Jan 1874]
“Caltowie . . . We have two separate day schools in our township, one conducted by a male teacher in the Roman Catholic Church : the other by a female, in the Wesleyan Church. Both schools are fairly attended. Another public schoolroom is about to be erected at the north end of the area, to meet the requirements of the children in that part.” [Yorke’s Peninsula Advertiser 11 Aug 1874]
“Catholic Church at Caltowie. . . a meeting of the congregation of this Church was held for the purpose of considering the advisability of erecting a larger Church, the present building being inadequate to the requirements of the district. It was agreed that the Church was necessary, and a working committee was elected, consisting of the pastor and a number of the congregation. A vote of thanks was given to Rev. Father Pallhuber for his past services, which were highly spoken of by several residents.” [Adelaide Observer 5 Apr 1884]
“The building itself is a very handsome one being lofty and well ventilated- and harmonious in all its details, and the Roman Catholics of Caltowie can now congratulate themselves on having one of the finest churches in the North.” [Areas Express 24 Mar 1885]
“The parishioners of St. Kilian's Church, Caltowie, met on Sunday after mass in the schoolroom to honour Miss Edith Kitson, the third daughter of Mr. P. Kitson to volunteer for active service abroad as a nurse. A gold pendant and chain were handed to Nurse Kitson on behalf of himself and parishioners by the Ven. Archdeacon Doyle. He said four of five children in the Kitson family had gone on active service.” [Observer 2 Jun 1917]
