Sichem Lutheran church, Dalkey

Site of the pug & pine church with shingle roof built 1872, used until 1899 when St Bartholomew’s Lutheran built in Balaklava. Also used as Lutheran school 1875 until a school was built across the road in 1905, school closed 1917.

 

“The Lutherans, who for some thirty years have held service in their Church at Sichem, three miles from Balaklava.” [Register 26 Aug 1899]

 

“The annual examination of the Sichem School, Dalkey, took place on Tuesday. There are 28 pupils on the roll. The school is a denominational one (Lutheran). The children were examined by the teacher, Mr. F. A. H. Klaehne, in the presence of a number of parents of the pupils. In addition to the usual branches of education taught, the children were examined in translation from German to English, and vtce versa, and in the Lutheran catechism. The parents expressed themselves highly pleased with the progress of the scholars. After the examination an adjournment was made to Mr. Kitto's paddook, where a picnic was held, the party (about 100) dispersing at sunset.” {Chronicle & Weekly Mail 13 Oct 1877]
