Ararat Immaculate Conception Catholic church
Foundation stone 27 Mar 1927 by Bishop D Foley, architect A A Pritsch, opened 4 Mar 1928. Previously temporary chapel-school 1857, first bluestone church built 1864, demolished 1927.
“The present church, a bluestone building, is to be demolished, and the new edifice will be on the same site, but as its dimensions will be much larger than the present church, it will extend somewhat on to the presbytery garden, and will be adjacent to the Brigidine Convent. . . Standing on a high level, it will have a commanding view over the town and district.” [Advocate 3 Mar 1927]
“The church is being constructed of bluestone with cement dressings of Romanesque, and provision has been made for the erection of transepts and extensions to the building at a future date. Three-light cathedral windows and a massive arch will set off the front of the building, and a campanile rising 102ft. from the ground. . . The building of the new church synchronises with the golden jubilee of the parish priest, the Very Rev. P. O'Hare. [Advocate 31 Mar 1927]
