US Air Force | McDonnell Douglas F-15A-14-MC Eagle | cn A135 | 75-0055

KLFI (Langley Air Force Base / Joint Base Langley-Eustis) - 16 OCT 2014

I saw the dramatic skies while heading out to grab a bite to eat, so I stopped and took this picture with my iPhone 5s. This F-15 has been here since 04 OCT as a new addition to aircraft on display at Langley AFB. The aircraft has been given the name "Spirit of the Virginia Peninsula". The display is not yet complete as seen here.

This particular aircraft has been used as a battle damage repair training airframe here at Langley AFB since 2005 or earlier.

It has been nearly 1-1/2 years since the decision was made to try to keep the last remaining, non-flyable F-15A on Langley AFB from going to a new home at some other location around the USA. When the Virginia Air and Space Center in Hampton, VA was unable to raise the funds to move and display the aircraft there, the 1st Fighter Wing Association, with the approval of the Board, quickly stepped in and pledged some funds to hold the jet in place until the 1st Fighter Wing, the 633rd Air Base Wing, and the 1st Fighter Wing Association could develop a display plan for the aircraft. Permission was obtained from the Air Force Museum to keep the aircraft at Langley and use it in a memorial display at a location adjacent to Sweeney Blvd, inside the Armistead Gate. Eventually, there will be descriptive plaques, night lighting, and seating near the aircraft. The aircraft has been completely demilitarized, painted and decaled as the 1st Fighter Wing Commander's airplane with all three Squadron decals on the intake. On the nose ahead of the canopy is a decal with the aircraft's name, "Spirit of the Virginia Peninsula".
