Today's photo - "Jammers my Friend"

It's with a deep heart that I come to terms with the inevitable, not only myself but my wife and sadly the kids. "Jammers" as the kids call him, is very sick and old and it's time for us to do the right thing. His given name is Jonathan (long story) and when my wife and I were single (no kids) and adopted him we tried to hard to rename him. We tried Spike, Killer, Butch, etc... but nothing stuck. The kids started calling him Jammers, and that somehow stuck! See 'Jammers' had always been an aggressive dog, loyal as dogs are, and extremely protective of us - so my wife and I wanted a "tough" name for him.. in the end, Jonathan stayed Jonathan, then JJ for short and finally Jammers!

I remember when he was just a pup I'd lay on the floor and he'd plop himself on my chest as if he didn't weight anything (he was about 1 and half to 2 years when we adopted him and fully grown). He had a partner (Raven) who we lost to a brain tumor some years back. Raven and JJ were best of friends. Raven was the Alpha and she would always put him on check. When she left us, JJ seemed sad but as the kids got older, he's spirits improved. And as time wore on, the kid's love for him grew as well.

Today was hard, we decided we had to be honest with the kids and tell them 'Jammers' was very sick, and old and that come Friday, he would be going to the Dr. and was not coming back. Their little hearts broke and they cried for a while. We were all out back with Jammers sitting on the grass. Jammers mustered the energy to get up from where he was laying, and walked towards the kids and tapped his nose on them, as if to comfort them and tell them it was going to be OK...

Cheers my friend, my first little boy, thank you for all the joy you have brought to me, and our lives and for being a great protector. I love you JJ.
