First Quarter Moon late evening San Francisco taken from front stairs 20250306-212436
This is the second of two photos I made of the first quarter moon on March 6, 2025. I used aperture preferred, spot focus, and infinity settings on my Canon Powershot SX50. Framing assist helped me locate the subject in the sky (letting me a wide angle view with the push of a button and then returning to long focal length upon release. Image stabilization also helps, though I have always had a rather steady hand. The highlighted portion of the moon was at the top during the day and was at the bottom eight hours later. I always shoot the moon as though it were a daytime shot because of the brightness. That is why it is especially to make sure the spot is on the moon, so the surrounding darkness will not influence the exposure. I used to use manual focus in the past, but find spot focus is usually sufficient to isolate the subject.
You can see the daylight shot in the previous slide.
