Waxing crescent day before first quarter moon as seen from San Francisco 20210218-210451
I made this photo of the waxing crescent moon on February 18, 2021 from the front of our San Francisco home. I am not usually looking at the sky for moon shots at 9 at night. However, this was a Thursday night and I was putting out the recycle and compost containers for the garbage company to pick up early Friday morning. In San Francisco we have three containers – one for recyclables such as cans, bottles, and paper, one for compost such as yard cuttings and kitchen food waste. There is also a container for items destined for land fill that we put out every couple or three weeks. I shot this hand held using my Canon Powershot SX50. I used manual settings and spot focus at infinity. I tried faster speeds but this third image capture, shot at 1/50 second turned out to be the one I liked best. I usually make moon shots using faster shutter speeds, but this moon had a glow around it that I was trying to capture. The glow was much more obvious to the naked eye than in this image capture.
