Visitor at Golden Gate National Cemetery 2010 Memorial Day San Bruno California 20100530-185626 C4
I made this photo at Golden Gate National Cemetery in May of 2010 on Memorial Day. A groundskeeper there told me various individuals and groups placed around 110,000 flags near each of the headstones for Memorial Day. GGNC is a somber place for those who visit or view it from various nearby roadways. Like the military, the cemetery denotes order and uniformity. The view in this photo is of headstones. In other parts of the cemetery, graves are marked with grass level grave stones in evening light. The names of the service members are engraved on the front of the headstones. The military spouse is also entitled to burial in the cemetery and the spouse's name is engraved on the back of the headstone. This photo depicts a visitor wearing a military jacket with a United States Flag patch on his shoulder; probably wishing a friend a peaceful rest. I shot this using my Canon Powershot SX20 that I was using at the time.
