Golden Gate National Cemetery east view from high ground San Bruno California 20100530-192356 C4

I made this photo at Golden Gate National Cemetery in May of 2010 on Memorial Day. A groundskeeper there told me various individuals and groups placed around 110,000 flags near each of the headstones. GGNC is a somber place for those who visit or view it from various nearby roadways. Like the military, the cemetery denotes order and uniformity. The view in this photo is of headstones. In other parts of the cemetery, graves are marked with engraved stones lying flat on the ground. The names of the service members are engraved on the front of the headstones. The military spouse is also entitled to burial in the cemetery and the spouse's name is engraved on the back of the headstone. I shot this using my Canon Powershot SX20 that I was using at the time.
