Buddhist deity Achala Vidyaraja or Fudo Myoo on display Sept 15, 2012 at Asian Art Museum San Francisco 20120915-102145 C4e
This photo is of a sculpture of The Buddhist deity Achala Vidyaraja or Fudo Myoo in Japanese is a wood made between 1100 - 1185 Japan Heian period of 794 - 1185.
The information sign that explained this carving read: Fudo - the immovable One - is one of the powerful deities known as the Five Bright Kings in Japanese Buddhism and folk religion. As a manifestation of the central cosmic Buddha Mahavairochana - Japanese: Dainichi, Fudo is believed to protect Buddhism and its true adherents.
Like all Bright Kings, Fudo assumes a frightening form, with a sqord in his right hand and a rope in his left. He sits in front of a swirling flame of fire, with which he purifies evil.
The left section of the flame is a modern replacement. I shot this at the San Francisco Asian Art Museum with my Canon EOS 60D.
