Eye chart for illiterate seen in Eastwind bookstore on Stockton Street at edge of San Francisco's Chinatown 160220-144539 C4e
After walking through the crowds of visitors along Grant Avenue on February 20, 2016 for the Chinese New Year Spring Festival, Melody and I walked up Columbus Avenue to Stockton Street, patronized a branch of our favorite bakery and headed for the Eastwind bookstore. Melody felt right at home. I did not understand any of the Chinese characters on the signs or book titles. I was intrigued enough with this eye chart and composed this photo to include the section identification of Medical Care. Some research indicates this eye chart was designed for use with illiterate people since they only have to indicate which way the Tumbling E is pointed - only four choices with no interpretation or knowledge of an alphabet or characters needed. Research did not reveal just who invented this eye chart. One article attributes it to a 1976 invention another written by Liuzhou Laowai credits the Chinese.
