Yosemite National Park Half Dome with hikers on cables 20110924-125110 C4
Captured this image of Yosemite National Park's Half Dome 10 minutes before the next slide during the 2011 Mono Lake Trip series of photos. The shaded portion to the right is the north face of the huge rock that rises 5,000 feet above Yosemite Valley and 8,800 feet above sea level. You may be able to see hikers along the cables near the left edge of the dome and sub dome. The cables are installed by end of May and removed 2nd week of October each year. It is a 14 - 16 mile round-trip hike to Half Dome and takes most seasoned and in shape people 10 to 12 hours to hike to Half Dome and back. Smart to start at or even before sunrise. Permits are now required and are issued by lottery. For a group to pass beyond the Subdome Check Point, the trip leader or alternate trip leader must be present with government issued photo identification and a copy of the permit.
Found out recently that my ex hiked the trail in 2000 with family members. She has a photo taken from sub dome with Half dome clearly close by in the background - cables and all. Bravo to Delmy for making it that far - with all in the hiking party encouraging and supporting each other.
I think this 70+ photographer will stay content with viewing Half Dome and other strenuous Yosemite sights from the luxury of class 1 hiking trails or stopping places along the road.
