Tufas at Mono Lake eastern California 20110924-172351 C4

Captured this image of Tufa Towers at Mono Lake after we had been in the area a few hours. This was taken on the trail from south Tufa parking area - since that was the only Mono Lake stop besides our first at the Visitor Center on the north of the town of Lee Vining in eastern California at the edge of the Mono Basin. As mentioned in descriptions of other tufa images in this series, Tufas only grown under the water - forming these limestone towers. They now are above the water only because the lake has receded due to drain-off of the water started in 1941. Tufas as even more impressive up close than in these photos. From what we saw in our few times visiting this and other areas of the Mono Lake shore, visitors respect these relics of nature.

Captured with Canon EOS 60D.
