Early Evening Tufas Mono Lake from South Tufa beach eastern California 20110924-175754 C4A

Captured this image of tufas jutting out of Mono Lake and some nearby on the left a few minutes before a couple of photographers started setting up their tripods to take this same photo from a closer vantage point. You can see this in the next slide.

Tufas are formed underwater and are, essentially, limestone. They have become visible as the level of Mono Lake has lowered during the last 70 years after water first began being diverted from the lake. At this time in late September 2011, we actually passed tufas on our way from the parking area to the south Tufa beach of Mono Lake where I took this photo. Still using my Canon EOS 60D on this first evening at Mono Lake.
