Tufas near sunset Mono Lake taken at South Tufa shoreline 20110924-181144 C4
Captured this image of Tufa Towers from South Tufa area of Mono Lake shoreline. This is similar to the same scene the photographers in the previous slide probably captured.
Tufas are formed underwater and are, essentially, limestone. They have become visible as the level of Mono Lake has lowered during the last 70 years after water first began being diverted from the lake. The Mono Lake Committee has worked diligently to arrest the robbing of water from Mono Lake - with some success.
The time was 11 minutes after 6 PM and the sun would be setting soon. The was the end of our first three hours of our Mono Lake visit in late September 2011. I was still using my Canon EOS 60D at the end of our first afternoon and evening at Mono Lake and Lee Vinings. Pleasant memories.
