Crater Trails above Mono Lake - Plug Trail left - Rim trail right 20110925-162928 C4A
This is the original crop of a digital image captured while walking the crater trail above Mono Lake. You can see the lake in the left middle of the image. Used Canon EOS 60D from a large gravel path somewhere near the mouth of the crater. We had two choices and eventually doubled back to the parking area as we tired of walking with potentially unknown results. Never got to see into the crater. You can see by the trees on the top of a nearby rocky mound, that perspective is deceiving and things are farther apart than they seem.
Maybe the next time, if ever, I visit Mono Lake I will spend more time exploring the many craters in the area. The area was very inhospitable, though, and was a bit too strenuous toward the end of a busy day.
