Tufas from Navy Beach at Mono Lake late September evening Eastern California 20110925-170430 C4

Captured this image of a small group of Tufa towers in Mono Lake, located in the desert surrounding the town of Lee Vining in Eastern California. Actually, the countryside is very diverse in this area, with desert, sage, and scrubs, volcanic craters, lush forests in the mountains to the West, nearby hot springs, and this large alkaline lake that supports brine shrimp and various bird populations and these limestone deposits called Tufas. Unlike the tufas in the morning sun of the next day - seen in the following slides - the pending darkness of a stormy night presented these Tufa Towers as almost gray and unglamorous.

Shot with Canon Powershot SX30 zoom focal length.
