View from Panum Crater trail near Mono Lake 20110925-162541 C4e2
When one views photographs of Mono Lake, it might be difficult to imagine desert. It might also be difficult to imagine volcanic craters. This image was taken while hiking on a volcanic crater above Mono Lake. This is looking toward the southwest of the Lake. Looks innocuous enough. However, the scrub brush shown in this photo is not only as tall as a short person - such as I - but close together and difficult to walk through. Scrub Brush can also be dangerous. The grayish area crossing the middle of this image is a burned out area of scrub that was caused by a brush fire - shown in the previous slide. The reason the fire probably did not travel closer to our viewpoint was that the road in the photo provided a fire break; or, it may have been a controlled burn to reestablish native grasses instead of invasive sage brush.
