Photoshop:

1 Create a fill layer (Hue/Saturation)

2 De-Saturate (0%)

3 Choose black as foreground color

4 Use 'Brush' Tool (soft/round)

5 Shade area

6 White as foreground to correct

Black = Reveal

White = Conceal
