SR 31848 at an unknown location

SR N class, built at Ashford using parts manufactured at Woolwich Arsenal entering service numbered A848 February 1925.Later numbered 1848. Renumbered 31848 August 1948. Full frame conversion October 1955 and withdrawn February 1964.
Ran without smoke deflectors October 1955 to February 1957. Since 31848 had been fitted with a Standard 4 blast pipe and the Standard locomotives did not require deflector plates than possibly those Southern locos also fitted with Standard 4 blast pipes and chimneys would also not require deflectors plates. This did not prove to be the case and the plates were reinstated in February 1957.
'Full frame and Front End conversion' was a bit of a misnomer and possibly should be 'rebuilt'. The N and U class locos treated either received new frames, or new front portions to the existing frames, together with cylinders, buffer beam and buffers, draw hook, footplating, steps,spring and brake hanger brackets, all drawn from stores prior to arrival. Also drawn from stores was a replacement boiler.
