32438 Tonbridge Shed 29 July 1955
One of 55 LBSCR C2 class locos build by Vulcan Foundry between 1893 and 1902. As LBSCR 438 entered service April 1893, Vulcan Foundry works number 1380. Rebuilt with C3 type boiler February 1924 as class C2X, finally withdrawn as BR 32438 December 1961. There were 15 C3 type boilers fitted with L Billington's top feed and extra dome. The top feed was eventually replaced by side feed, however the extra dome was not removed. These boilers were not allocated to specific locos but were used as pool boilers appearing on most C2Xs, a few C3s, E5Xs and E6Xs.
Of the C2s all except for 10 were built as C2Xs. All the remainder bar 3 were withdrawn prior to 1939. The three survivors were 2435 withdrawn in May 1948, 2436 was based at Three Bridges and survived until Jan 1950, and 2533 based at Newhaven and withdrawn Feb 1950. None of these three received their BR number. I can recall seeing both of these in their final days.
Taken from an original 6x9 box camera negative.
