Mythbusters

In 2002, Peter Rees pitched an idea called "Tall Tales or True" to Discovery Channel, in which a legend or urban myth would be retold by scientists. Discovery thought that would be boring, so Rees changed it so only parts of the legends would be recreated, then tested by scientists to see if it was true or possible. Discovery liked this idea, and chose special effects artist Jamie Hyneman to host the show, as he had worked with Discovery before on "Beyond 2000" and "BattleBots." Hyneman thought he was too uninteresting to host the show on his own, so he brought on Adam Savage, another BattleBots alumni, as co-host. Thus, "MythBusters" was born.

No one could have predicted that MythBusters would last 13 seasons with Hyneman and Savage, and become one of the most popular shows on TV. In addition to the two main hosts, the show also brought on the "Build Team" of Tory Belleci, Kari Byron, and Grant Imahara. Both groups would test various myths, urban legends, supposed historical events, and movie stunts, to see if they were confirmed, plausible, or busted. The show became popular because it satisfied curiosity, promoted science, and because the hosts liked to blow things up. (Blowing things up led to the only two accidents in the show's history--cracking windows in a nearby California community, and accidentally skipping a cannonball into another.)

The show came to an end after the 2016 season, though it was revived with new hosts and a new team on the Science Channel the next year.

Cosplaying as real people is more done as historical reenactment, but cosplaying as TV hosts is not something done very often. Hyneman and Savage got the treatment at ACen 2011, when these two cosplayers decided to dress as the hosts at the height of Mythbusters' popularity. It may seem like a simple cosplay, but it's deceptively a bit complicated: because everyone has seen Mythbusters, small details will be noticed. These guys found Hyneman's signature cap and Savage's jacket and fedora, then produced the show's iconic "Confirmed" and "Busted" titles. They got a lot of looks and pictures, and I was no different.

Incidentally, cosplaying as Adam Savage is a bit meta--Savage is an avid cosplayer himself, as he is a big anime fan.
