Westminster Pier

Once again the description on the postcard is incorrect, at least for the paddle steamer nearest the camera. The "Penelope" was owned by the "Thames Steamboat Company" at the time of the photograph, it was built for the "River Thames Steamboat Company" in 1889 by the Samuda Bros at Poplar and named "The Shah", the name was changed in 1899 to "Penelope". The construction of Scotland House can be seen in the background together with the bridge which was to connect New Scotland Yard with Scotland House. The construction took place between 1902 and 1906, this is probably 1904 or thereabouts.
