Piccadilly Circus: 1991

This is a publicity shot of the American grunge band “Nirvana”, it was taken in Piccadilly Circus on Thursday 22nd August 1991 and despite the passage of nearly twenty-nine years, this doesn’t seem like history to me. The date is known because the coup leader mentioned on the news placard held by Dave Grohl (Drummer) was Boris Pugo, the Interior Minister and one of the gang of eight who attempted a coup against Mikhail Gorbachev, the President of the Soviet Union. The band was in the UK for the Reading Festival which was held over three days, 23rd – 25th and they were to play on the first day half way down the bill after Iggy Pop, Sonic Youth, Pop will eat itself, Dinosaur Jnr and Chapterhouse. They were to release their breakthrough album “Nevermind” a month later and previewed some of the songs on the album in their set including “Smells like teen spirit”. They returned to Reading the following year as the headline act and performed what is regarded as their finest live performance. The members of the band from the left are, Krist Novoselic, Kurt Cobain and Dave Grohl. The gang of eight had detained Mikhail Gorbachev at his holiday Dacha in the Crimea, it failed because of the resistance in Moscow led by Boris Yeltsin, the Russian President. When the coup failed all the gang were arrested except Boris Pugo who is believed to have shot his wife and then himself.
