Piccadilly Circus: 1935

This is a J. Beagles & Co Ltd postcard showing Piccadilly Circus looking northeast with Shaftesbury Avenue on the left and Coventry Street on the right, it is 1935 and the English language version of “The Man from Folies Bergere” is playing at the London Pavilion. There was an English and a French language version made at the same time using a different cast except for Maurice Chevalier who played the title role in both films. In this version his co-star was Merle Oberon and it played at the London Pavilion from 7th March until 30th March 1935. The bus on the extreme left is carrying an advertisement for “Marie Elisabeth” Portuguese sardines, a brand which is still available today unlike “Essolube” Motor Oil advertised on a billboard extreme right which is no longer available. The bus in the centre is advertising The Daily Mail’s “Ideal Home Exhibition” at Olympia, being King George V’s Silver Jubilee year, the main exhibit was “The King’s House”, together with “Gardens of the Nations”, “Needlework Avenue”, “Tom Thumb’s Menagerie” and “Alfredo’s Gipsy Orchestra”.
