Piccadilly Circus: 1953
This is a Photochrom Company Ltd postcard showing the scene in Piccadilly Circus on a very wet Tuesday 2nd June 1953 when the newly crowned Queen Elizabeth II in the Gold State Coach entered the Circus from Regent’s Street. The route from the Abbey to Buckingham Palace was not the most direct route, it was designed to let as many people see the Queen as possible, the route was Whitehall, Pall Mall, St. James’s Street, Piccadilly, Hyde Park Corner, East Carriage Road in Hyde Park, Marble Arch, Oxford Street, Oxford Circus, Regent’s Street, Piccadilly Circus, Haymarket, Cockspur Street and The Mall. the image shows the boarded-up statue of Eros with a “Birdcage” surrounding the actual statue, like many of the street decorations, the “Birdcage” was designed by Sir. Hugh Casson.
