Piccadilly Circus: 1952

This is a Valentine & Sons Ltd postcard showing the view from the junction with Lower Regent Street looking north towards Shaftesbury Avenue. The American “B” Movie Musical, “Rainbow round my shoulder” is playing at the London Pavilion. The film ran from 12th September until 9th October 1952. It starred Frankie Lane and Billy Daniels, the title comes from the Al Jolson song which he sang in an early talkie, “Singing Fool”. In the film, Frankie Lane sings an updated version. There is a small sign underneath the “Wrigley’s Chewing Gum” sign which says “Bandwagon”, it was an advertisement for a magazine published by Norman Kark publications of Grand Buildings, Trafalgar Square, which described itself as The Journal of Leisure and others described as the British “New Yorker” magazine. The sign disappeared from Piccadilly Circus in 1952 as did the magazine. There was a paper shortage for several years after WW2 and the magazine was at one time published bi-monthly and its size varied considerably. Another space on the London Pavilion on the Shaftesbury Avenue side advertised “The Courier” which was another Norman Kark lifestyle magazine which merged with “Today” in the early 1950s.
