Piccadilly Circus: 1954

This is an anonymously published postcard showing Piccadilly Circus looking east towards Coventry Street with Shaftesbury Avenue on the left. Compared to my recent posts of the Circus this is pretty poor quality even though it is nearly forty-five years later. This is the first week in June 1954 and the 3D film, “The Phantom of the Rue Morgue” is playing for just one week at the London Pavilion, it starred Karl Malden and Steve Forrest and was based on Edgar Allan Poe’s short story, “The Murders in the Rue Morgue”. I always liked Karl Malden in "The Streets of San Francisco” on TV, but the coolest man on TV in the early 1960s was Steve Forrest as “The Baron”, the American antique dealer and private detective who drove a Jensen CV8. Many of the products in the advertisements are still produced today but “Pan Yan Pickle” is no more and what about Libby’s Condensed milk or was it evaporated milk? The car bottom left looks like a Rover P4, but I could be wrong about that.
