Stratford upon Avon

This is another found Kodachrome slide showing the view in Chapel Street looking roughly south. On the left is the Shakespeare Hotel which is now the Mercure William Shakespeare Hotel and on the corner of church street is the Guild Chapel. At about the time of the photograph in 1955, wall paintings were discovered in the church dating from medieval times. They had been whitewashed over at the time of the reformation in the middle of the 16th century on the orders of John Shakespeare, William's father, who was the Chamberlain of the Corporation of Stratford. In 2016 work started on a scheme to preserve the wall paintings financed by the lottery fund.
