Lambeth Pier
This is an undivided back postcard published by Stengel & Co and printed in Dresden. The view shows Lambeth Palace from the Lambeth Suspension Bridge and two Thames Paddle Steamers, the river buses of their day. The Steamer moored at Lambeth Pier is the “Daisy” belonging to the Victoria Steamboat Association, this company operated paddle steamers from 1891 until 1896, one of the shorter lived Thames steamboat companies. The “Daisy” was originally built for the Citizen Steamboat Company in 1864 by a boat builder in Battersea. The Citizen boats as they were called were each identified by a letter of the alphabet, this boat was “Citizen D”, the name change happened in 1895 so this photograph can be dated to 1895-1896. In 1876 the Citizen company was taken over by the London Steamboat Company and subsequently by a number of others, the boat was removed from the Mercantile Navy list in 1909.
The stern of the other boat can be seen bottom left, the “Shamrock” was another Victoria Association boat originally built for the London Steamboat Company in 1882 at Battersea and continued in service until 1908 when it too was removed from the Mercantile Navy list.
