This is an illustration taken from the 15th May 1937 edition of the Illustrated London News. It shows Piccadilly Circus looking east from Piccadilly on 12th May 1937, the Coronation day of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. The painting is by Henry Charles Brewer who was a member of the Royal Institute of Artists and specialised in water colours. He was 71 years old when he painted the picture and he lived until 1950. The Shaftesbury memorial has not been protected by a hoarding unlike the subsequent Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II when it was. The film playing at the London Pavilion was a British made romance starring Douglas Fairbanks Jr and Valerie Hobson, by the next day, 13th May they were showing the film together with an official film of the Coronation and procession.
