The IRSN is the public expert organization managing nuclear risk in France. With more than 1 500 specialists, like researchers, doctors, agronomists and engineers, the organization is responsible for nuclear risks in the industrial world and the medical field as well as natural radioactivity.
Use Case
I designed the interface of the search system. I first distinguished different user groups according to domain expertise, search experience and situational idiosyncrasies. And then studied the needs within each group. The search interface had to support known item search, exploratory seeking, 'Don't know yet what I need to know' and Re-finding mode of seeking. As the chosen technology had only recently been developed in the academic world, no interface design effort had yet been made to improve its usability. I was able to translate abstract search concepts into easy to grasp mental models.
