GEORGE DUKE FACES IN REFLECTION Front cover
Released circa June 1974
It`s great to see so many getting into the late George Duke. He was underrated and somewhat unknown for years. An exceptional talent! I saw him "live" with Frank Zappa a few times in the mid 70s and again solo in 1977. He was brilliant. I just can`t get enough of this FACES IN REFLECTION album of his from earlier 1974. It`s my current most favorite played album. Strange as fate would have it, I never heard this album till about a year ago. I was a big George Duke/Zappa fan, saw them live in 1974, Boston, right when Roxy & Elsewhere came out, and it was about then, fall `74, I believe that Duke`s FEEL was released and I bought it right away with the big news that Frank (Obdewl`l X) played a few solos on it. Fantastic album, loved it, still do. When I bought it, there was another slightly older Duke solo album also out, Faces In Reflection, which I didn`t buy not knowing it and knowing Feel was the one I wanted. As time went by I forgot about Faces In Reflection and it seemed to disappear from my mind and record stores. It seemed newer George Duke solo albums started coming out regularly, The Aura Will Prevail, I Love The Blues etc., Liberated Fantasies and I was buying them as they came out and loving them. Decades went by and I forgot about and maybe saw Faces In Reflection like once in my years of travel but never bothered to get it till about a year ago and I was sorry I missed it all of those years. Again, a favorite current album. I`ve even picked up Inner Source, Save The Country, and the early Jean Luc Ponty albums with George Duke. I can`t get enough of it. Although I realize the extreme talent of the late George Duke and success he had making and producing R&B and funky albums for other artists, I still prefer his earlier more straighter jazz stuff on the MPS label and highly recommend it. I also highly recommend the George Duke tracks recorded with Frank during the 1972 Grand Wazoo sessions and unreleased till late 2022 on the Zappa Waka/Wazoo box set. If you don`t want to spend the bucks for the box set, Spotify has those tracks that you can listen to. It was Frank Zappa who encouraged him on synthesizer and vocals and he just ran with it surpassing himself over and over. What a fantastic musician, singer and producer he was.
