Atom tandem hub
I finally decided to service this hub. It polished up nicely. The date code is 9-9 which I guess to be September 1979. Mike at peugeottandem.com has some good info on these. I was glad to discover that it's threaded for a standard freewheel. For now I'll keep the 14-28 5speed Atom "tandem" freewheel, though I wouldn't mind a lower gear for going over the mountain.
Currently rebuilding with original spokes and an Alesa made in Belgium alloy rim. The original chromed Rigida rims are strong but don't provide good braking. This hub has a built in drum brake on the other side. As the original 9.5 mm axel was bent I'm considering drilling out the brake to accept a more standard 10mm axel. Mike Smith called these hubs the Achilles heel of the Peugeot tandem, but my brake works well and as long as I get the axel sorted out I will be glad to put my Atom back into service come spring.
