The cake

I've tried to re-create what is for me, The birthday cake, or maybe just The cake. It's what I grew up eating, in some variation, on all birthdays.

This is a yellow or a white layer cake, and it's a moist one, lined with vanilla custard and raspberries, and infused throughout with orange. The topping is basic: delicate whipped cream and chocolate shavings.
