Upper Sanatorium Falls, also known as Sanatorium Falls, is considered a complex ribbon cascade type falls which is located on a tributary of the Chedoke Creek. Its height is 9m (30 ft.) and its width is 3m (10 ft.).
To reach Upper Sanatorium Falls, take the Garth St. North exit off the LINC, then turn left onto Denlow Dr. (one block before Fennell Ave.). Denlow becomes Scenic Dr. and follow Scenic Dr. to Sanatorium Rd., turning right onto it. Follow Sanatorium Rd. to the escarpment brow and the waterfall is located at the mouth of the gorge. It should be noted that this waterfall does dry up, so the best time to view it is after a rainfall or during the winter snow melt.
Sanatorium Falls got its name from the Sanatorium Hospital which existed at the top of the escarpment in the early 1900’s. From 1908 to 1931 the Brantford and Hamilton Electric Railway ran hourly service between the two cities along the route now known as the Chedoke Radial Trail. One stop along this train route was for the Sanatorium Hospital and stairs were constructed up the Niagara Escarpment beside Sanatorium Falls to reach the hospital. These stairs are visible in a vintage postcard titled “Ravine Mountain Sanatorium” which shows how Upper Sanatorium Falls existed about a century ago as per this link and in first comment below: www.flickr.com/photos/31155442@N03/50604952476/in/album-7...
A current photo of Upper Sanatorium Falls as show here, indicates changes such as the disappearance of these stairs, and that the creek above the falls has been enclosed into a large ugly storm sewer pipe.
Another photo taken from the side, which excludes the storm sewer pipe, shows the beauty of this waterfall as per this link and in the second comment below: www.flickr.com/photos/31155442@N03/50605515037/in/album-7...
